    Diminished Power and Acceleration

    Engines require a minimum specific volume of air with which to introduce fuel and start combustion and thereby generate power. Air intake is not static but dynamic and limited by conditions such as an obstructed air filter. Therefore all defects here are of immense proportion with respect to power output.

    During acceleration of the automobile under specific conditions, the engine is in demand of a large amount of air, but of course, it has been previously spoken of that the air flow has been obstructed from entering the engine. In serious situations, this would even keep the vehicle from accelerating past certain conditions.

    Normally, engines produce energy by inhaling air combined with fuel for combustion initiation. Thus, the creation of more power is directly associated with increasing the amount of air into the engine through breathing. Therefore, many people are led to the assumption that if a blocked air filter is the problem, significant fuel inefficiency will exist.

    Performance Loss

    The piston "slides down the cylinder" into the intake phase of the burning process, and there the air and fuel can be introduced. The downward action of the cylinder will obstruct the intake simply because of the density of the air being taken in. For that reason, the engine would produce less power on the whole because less air is involved in the burning process.

    Long Standing Issues

    With time, the air filter fibre begins to deteriorate, allowing minute quantities of dirt to enter the engine. Because of the intense heat and pressure inside the cylinder, even small dust particles can cause significant damage to internal parts.
